The conference story

Cornell’s own support system became part of the conversation.

More than 240 students and 50 administrators from 25 institutions traded practical ideas about first-generation support while Cornell took stock of its own growing but decentralized resources.

Inside the gathering

A national exchange with local stakes.

First, but never alone

Co-chairs Natalia De La Caridad Hernandez and Elia Morelos asked each delegation to share what its campus had built and learn from the work underway elsewhere. The goal was practical: make being first less isolating and send people home with ideas they could adapt.

Cornell was named to the First-Gen Forward cohort the following day after cataloging an extensive but decentralized support system. The timing put the host campus’s own challenge in view: strong resources matter more when students can find and use them.
